  discuss,describe,explain,present, point out

  criticize,correct,question,compare...

  distinction,distinguish,difference,contrast

  客观objective/unbiased/justified/disinterested

  怀疑skeptic/question/doubt

  公正dispassionate/detached/neutral

  (enthusiastic/indignant/indifference)*括号当中为反例

  批评criticize(decry/disparage/deprecate)

  全面qualified/reserved/guarded

  讽刺ironic/amused(cynical)

  a.一些副词:fortunately,unfortunately,merely,erroneously,falsely....

  b.动词:mislead,overestimate,fail to..

  1.It would be wonderful to observe a singularity and obtain direct evidence of the undoubtedly bizarre phenomena that occur near one. Unfortunatelyin most cases a distant observer cannot see the singularity;

  2. But those of us who hoped, with Kolb, that Kolb's newly published complete edition of Proust's correspondence for 1909 would document the process in greater detail are disappointed.

  3. Thomas Hardy's impulses as a writer, all of which he indulged in his novels, were numerous and divergent, and they did not always work together in harmony.

  4. As for the left-eyed and right-eyed flatfish, their difference, however striking, appears to be an evolutionary red herring.

  5. The activity has been brisk, and a new creed has now spread.

The author's attitude toward the “activity” mentioned in line 23 and its consequences can best be described as one of

  (A) amused tolerance

  (B) mocking envy

  (C) grave doubt

  (D) angry disapproval

  (E) unrestrained enthusiasm

Policymakers must confront the dilemma that fossil fuels continue to be an indispensable source of energy even though burning them produces atmospheric accumulations of carbon dioxide that increase the likelihood of potentially disastrous global climate change. Currently, technology that would capture carbon dioxide emitted by power plants and sequester it harmlessly underground or undersea instead of releasing it into the atmosphere might double the cost of generating electricity. But because sequestration does not affect the cost of electricity transmission and distribution, delivered prices will rise less, by no more than 50 percent. Research into better technologies for capturing carbon dioxide will undoubtedly lead to lowered costs.

  1. The passage implies which of the following about the current cost of generating electricity?

  A. It is higher than it would be if better technologies for capturing carbon dioxide were available。

  B. It is somewhat less than the cost of electricity transmission and distribution。

  C. It constitutes at most half of the delivered price of electricity。

Currently, technology[ that would capture carbon dioxide emitted by power plants and sequester it harmlessly underground or undersea instead of releasing it into the atmosphere ]might double the cost of generating electricity. Butbecause sequestration does not affect the cost of electricity transmission and distribution, delivered prices will rise less, by no more than 50 percent.

African music, unlike the music of some other cultures, was based on a total vision of life in which music was not an isolated social domain.

The phrase isolated social domain refers to

  (A) African music in relation to contemporary culture as a whole

  (B) music as it may be perceived in non-African cultures

  (C) a feature of African music that aided in transmitting African cultural values

  (D) an aspect of the African cultural legacy

(E)the influence of music on contemporary culture

African music is not an isolated social domain,

Perhaps, some scientists thought, migrants determine their geographic position on Earth by celestial navigation, almost as human navigators use stars and planets, but this would demand of the animals a fantastic map sense.

In maintaining that migrating animals would need “a fantastic map sense” to determine their geographic position by celestial navigation, the author intends to express

  (A) admiration for the ability of the migrants

  (B) skepticism about celestial navigation as an explanation

  (C) certainly that the phenomenon of migration will remain mysterious

  (D) interest in a new method of accounting for over-water migration

  (E) surprise that animals apparently navigate in much the same way that human beings do

Inevitably, because Hardy did not care in the way that novelists such as Flaubert or James cared, and therefore took paths of least resistance. Thus, one impulse often surrendered to a fresher one and, unfortunately, instead of exacting a compromise, simply disappeared.

The passage supplies information to suggest that its author would be most likely to agree with which of the following statements about the novelists Flaubert and James?

  (A) They indulged more impulses in their novels than did Hardy in his novels.

  (B) They have elicited a greater degree of favorable response from most literary critics than has Hardy.

  (C) In the writing of their novels, they often took pains to effect a compromise among their various novelistic impulses.

  (D) Regarding novelistic construction, they cared more about the opinions of other novelists than about the opinions of ordinary readers.

  (E) They wrote novels in which the impulse toward realism and the impulse away from realism were evident in equal measure.
