One of the best shopping experiences that I can remember is about three years ago when Christmas was coming. I happened to be in the US, taking part in an exchange program. In the past I never celebrated the Christmas Day. But being in a foreign country, I suddenly wanted to spend this holiday with some new friends I met there. So I bought a tree and then I went to Rich’s, a department store to buy some exquisite ornaments for the tree.
The saleslady was a middle-aged woman. She was very patient. At first I didn’t know what to buy. There were so many exquisite ornaments that I didn’t know what to choose. She asked me how big the tree was and gave me many great suggestions. We had a nice talk. When I finally got things done, she took the time to carefully wrap each ornament I bought, about 25 or 30, separately in several layers of tissue paper. I didn’t ask her to do it but once I realized what she was doing, it occurred to me how thoughtful she was and I thanked her. She told me that she treats her customers the way she likes to be treated. I appreciated her thoughtfulness and the whole shopping experience was quite pleasant.
What makes me happy in this shopping experience is not the ornaments I’ve got for the Christmas tree, but the kindness between strangers. The saleslady knew that I would not reduce the number of ornaments I bought if she didn’t wrap these ornaments so carefully, but she offered to do that to make her customers feel better about the goods. This kindness needs to be remembered and advocated. I believe, the personal behavior such as what the saleslady did will induce the whole society into a more loving place.
