Today, I’m going to talk about a rule at my primary school. Well, the primary school I went to was in fact pretty nice with its students, since there weren’t that many rules and regulations. We were for instance, encouraged to speak in class as much as possible, because the teachers considered it a good way to help us improve our skills of public speech. As you can tell, it was that sort of place, really liberal.
This one rule that I remember though, was that we were not allowed to use our mobile phones in class. The school was strict with this regulation and anyone who dares to break it would most likely get himself into trouble. But normally, it wouldn’t be that much big of a problem. Say, if a teacher, who is nice, catches a student playing with his mobile phone in class, he will most probably just tell the student to stop playing and pay attention to what the class is about. Unfortunately, there were some teachers who were extremely strict with this rule, and would confiscate whatever mobile phones they encountered in a classroom, even one lying quietly on top of a desk. So, as you might have noticed, when it comes to the consequences when breaking this regulation, it is pretty much a thing about luck.
I suppose the reason why this rule was made is to make sure that the teachers have their students’ full and undivided attention in class. It’s true that a student can use his mobile phone to text others, play games and watch videos, etc. If any of these happens in class, it will definitely have some bad influence on the student’s academic performance.
Well, did I like the rule? Not really. On one hand, the rule did work well in preventing students from doing things not related to study using their mobile phones in class, which was, without doubt, good news to the teachers. Yet one the other hand, it also made it impossible for students to learn in a more effective way, by which I mean learning through some really great applications on mobile phones.
