I’m going to talk about my father because he has always been a good role model for me as I grow up. I’m very proud of him. He is hard working, patient and understanding. He also has a good sense of humor and seems to get on well with everybody. Though he is busy at work, he manages to make time for me. He never missed important moments of my life like the graduation ceremony. Though nowadays I study at a university far away from home and have less time with him, I enjoy the time I spend with him when I’m home.
Talking about the specific things that he does that makes me proud, well, I shall say I appreciate his way of education. I was a very curious kid. But he never got fed with my questions. He bought a lot of books for me. It’s because of him that I have formed the good habit of reading. Besides I think my father set a good example by working hard and having a positive outlook on life. He once told me that only fear can defeat life, but the only thing we need to fear is fear itself. It was difficult to understand at the very beginning; however, as time goes by that line has become my motto.

①What would children do to make their parents proud?
Well, I think there are a lot of things that children do to make their parents proud. When they are toddlers and manage to speak the first word or walk the first step, their parents would be extremely thrilled and proud. They would take pictures and share their joy with other family members. When the babies grow up and go to school, their good grades or good behavior would also make them proud. I think parents are proud of their children all the time. No matter how trivial the achievement may seem to other people, parents can always spot the sparkling points of their children.
②What did you do to make your parents proud when you were young?
Well, when I was in primary school, I picked up a cellphone on my way to school. At that time cellphone was not very common so I never got the chance to use it. Thus the first thing that came to my mind is to give it to my parents so they knew how to deal with it. But I was nearly late for school and had no time to get back home. So on the road I studied the phone and tried to contact the owner. Luckily I dug out the contacts in the phone and called the family member of the owner and finally sent it back. My parent did not know anything about it until the owner called them to express their gratitude. My parents felt very proud of me.
③What advantages of yours make you proud?
Well, I do have some advantages that make me feel proud of myself. The first thing is that I am a very considerate person. If I meet an elder or a child on the bus, I will let them take my seat. Because the bus could be very crowded in Beijing and these vulnerable groups may get hurt. So I’d like to do everything I can to help them. Besides I’m very hospitable. I like to invite my friends or coworkers to come to my house and cook some homemade dishes. They speak high of the food I make. Thus I’m very popular among my friends.
④When was the last time that you felt proud of yourself?
Well the last time I felt proud of myself is last Sunday when I finally baked perfect cookies. I have been learning bakery recently. But it didn’t go well at first. Either do I put too much sugar in the dough or baked too much that it turned black. But I didn’t give up. I went online and watched many videos to learn how to cook perfect cookies. I even bought a thermometer to help me judge the temperature in the oven. At last I figured out the reason why I failed. I’ve put the wrong type of sugar and the temperature of my oven is 10-degree higher than it should be. At last I made it and I’m very proud of myself.
11.Describe two people you know from the same family.
You should say:
who they are;

I would like to start the ball rolling by talking about two cousins I know, Jane and Jessica. They live not far from my place so we often get together to have fun. They look quite similar. They are both tall and thin. They all have long hair, big eyes and fair skin. Seen from a distance, they look like twins. But strangely, they have quite different personalities. Jane is outgoing and she likes adventures. She has gone to many places and some of these places are hard to reach and have few visitors. She would take a lot of pictures of these places and then send them to the magazines. We all love to hear her adventure stories. Jessica, however, is very tender. Her hobby is reading books and watching movies at home. She would never bother to travel so long just to take some photos.
Though they have totally different hobbies and characters, they get along very well with each other. They share the same taste of fashion so they often go shopping together. They all love pets. Jane has a dog and Jessica has a cat. The pets don’t get along so well, though. They always fight when they meet.
12.Describe a polite person you met.

who this person was;
when and where you met this person;

Well the person I’d like to talk about is a young girl I met at school named Sarah. We met each other in a school activity last year. We were advocating donations of books and clothes for poor children who live in the suburban area. She left a deep impression on me. Though I have only been with her for a few days, I think she is the nicest and most polite person I have ever known.
As to the reason why I think she is polite, well, she always says thank you to people, and she would express her gratitude through a nice gesture. In the activity we need to carry a few desks to the student center and fix up a place to accept donations. Some students volunteered to take the job. It was a hot day and she bought them mineral water to express her gratitude. When we were having dinners at the restaurant, she would thank the waiters and waitresses every time they brought a dish to the table. I think this was very sweet. And she always said nice things to people. For every piece of donation we received, she would make a comment about how good the cloth looks like and how generous people are. I think she genuinely means what she says.

Well Chinese people take much count of politeness, especially when we meet people who are elder than us. We would not call them by their names. Instead we will call them elder brother or sister, uncle or auntie. When we talk to them, we would use honorific terms to refer to them and humbling terms to refer to ourselves. It’s a way to show our respect. And when we are having dinners together, the young are not supposed to eat until the elder pick up their chopsticks. Also the young are not supposed to leave the table until everyone finishes their dinner. And the Chinese way to say hi is to ask them “Have you had lunch yet”.
②Is there any difference between etiquette in cities and in small towns?
People once thought that the etiquette in small towns is more complicated than in cities but it is not the case now. Much etiquette has been simplified and some is still kept. In the past, people used the square dining table, and the seat facing the door was saved for the eldest person in the family or the most respectable visitor. The seat on the opposite side is for people who are youngest. Nowadays, many families have adopted the round dining table so no special significance is given to each seat. But still there’s etiquette that is obeyed by every family, no matter where they are. For example, in the Spring Festival, people would take gifts and visit their relatives.
③How to teach children to be polite?
Well I think to teach children to be polite, their parents should first set a good example. There is an old saying in China that “Example is better than precept”. Children are vey good at imitating the behavior of their parents. Sometimes from the behavior of children, you can speculate what their parents are like. So it is really important for parents to behave themselves. Besides parents can teach their children through trivial affairs. For example ask children to say “thank you” when they get helped; do not interrupt other people when they are having a conversation; do not pry into other people’s privacy. Correct them timely when they make mistakes about being polite.
④How do you deal with impolite people?
Well, I think it depends on how impolite they are. Sometimes when I get on the bus and offer my seat to other people, most of them will say “thank you”. Maybe a small few would say nothing and just take the seat. I may feel not comfortable but I would say nothing. I think it is a little impolite but I can bear with it. But there were also times that I could not bear. One time when I got on the subway, there was a woman sitting next to me and she kept asking me what I did for a living and how much money I made every month. I did not even know her! So I just told her that it was none of her business.
⑤What kinds of behavior are not polite?
Well, I think the kind of behavior that makes other people uncomfortable is not polite. There was a time when we were having a meeting and our boss is giving a speech. Then someone’s phone rang. It was so embarrassing. So every day I go to work, I always make sure that I’ve turned the phone to the vibration mode. Besides, I think it is impolite to break the general rules or regulations. For example, some people like to talk loudly or bring smelly food on bus or in subway. Their behavior is really annoying. You know, the smell would linger for a long time. I cannot bear with it.
