Well, I guess there are many jobs out there that are very important.
For example, my uncle is, you know, a forest ranger. He joined thearmy in Sichuan province about 20 years ago, then took this job there after retirement.
My parents took me to visit him several times when I was a kid. Atthat time, honestly, I didn’t even know that he had a job. He was verymysterious, or, say, a little eccentric to me. I just remember he always lefthome before the sun rises and came back when the moon comes out, except that, youknow, sometimes, he doesn’t actually come back for a couple of days.
My mom told me that his job was to patrol the mountains, to protectthe forest and, you know, the wild lives. I didn’t actually understand what itmeant at that time.
This is what he does basically: In spring and summer, especiallyafter heavy rainfall, he would have to patrol the mountains, recording the erosionsthen report it to the local government so that it helps to predict potential debrisflows. In autumn, which is the best hunting season, he would have to spend daysin the woods to trace the smugglers and help the local police to put them tojustice. When winter comes, he still have to travel in the dry lands, lookingfor signs of potential wildfire.
Monotonous and low-paid as it is, I now come to understand that hisjob is really important because forests and wild animals help to keep thebalance of the eco-system, which means a lot to our lives.
I feel so grateful that there are some people out there protectingour environment, and I feel more than proud that my uncle is one of them.
