Describe a gift you gave to someone that you made by hand.
You should say:
What it was
Who you gave it to
How you made it
And explain why you gave it to this person as a gift.
Well, for the record, I don’t like gifts. I’m saying this because I rarely received anything to my liking from my friends. You know, postcards, CDs, handicrafts, books… You don’t know what to do with them, but you can’t just throw them away. For the same reason I seldom give gifts as well, but I do remember that I made one thing by hand for one of my best friends as a gift.
It’s a porcelain trophy. I made it when I was on a tour to Jingdezhen city, a small town in China famous for its best-quality ceramic products. One day we visited a famous local porcelain factory to learn the production process, and there was a workshop where you can learn and try tomake a piece of work by yourself. I didn’t have any intension to do it at first, so I walked away and went into a display room where you can see some ofthe most exquisite ceramic artworks, many of which are awarded with big titles. And there were lots of certificates, gold medals and trophies in that room aswell.
The moment I saw the trophies, an idea struck me—I wanted to make one for my friend Sam. Sam and I met on the basketball court two years ago in the 2012 Teenage Streetball National Championships. We came across twice in the preliminary rounds and soon became friends. He made a good opponent on the court. 187 tall, super-fast, creatively skilled, strategically smart, and team-play spirit—he has it all.
He would have had won the competition if it were not for the car accident in which he almost died. He had 9 injuries including a broken leg and two ribs. The doctors told him that he might not be able to go back to the basketball court, at least not as a career player. But he have faith, like he always did, that he can have a full recovery.
So I made him this trophy which says “World Streetball Champion”. I just hope this would bring him good luck.
