The school is planning to put a new sculpture in, and Paul wrote a letter against the sculpture plan. The woman is looking forward to seeing some good art on campus and disagrees with Paul’s letter for two reasons. First, While Paul argued in his letter that the sculpture would cost too much money that the university can’t afford to spend; the sculpture is being paid for mostly by this donor. Also, she knows that Paul and his friends like to kick the soccer ball around in front of the campus center, and don’t want the statue there, so they can keep playing soccer there.

Paul opposes the school’s decision to get a new sculpture for the campus. Because he thinks that the school is in no financial position to buy one and it would occupy public space that is supposed to be reserved for the students. The woman in the listening material strongly disagrees with the letter because there is a donor who pays for the sculpture so the university has no need to pay for it. Also, she believes that the reason why Paul is against this plan is that he does sports on that spot and he does not want to move.

One particular book that I always remember is Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond, a geography professor at UCLA. The book is a nonfictional account of human development throughout history. It focuses on agriculture, culture, and science as the engines of civilization. It is a long book about a difficult subject, but the author writes it in a way that is interesting and fun to read. I learned about many interesting connections between geography and the rise and fall of different peoples throughout human history. It offers me a fresh and grand perspective of humanity.

Well, the book that has influenced me the most is an ancient Chinese book called The Analects of Confucius. As a Chinese, I have always been interested in our heritage and The Analects of Confucius is the very foundation of Chinese culture. Reading it was the first step in my journey to grasp the beauty of ancient Chinese culture. Moreover, the morals and values it teaches have truly shown me how to tell what is right and what is wrong, and how to avoid making bad decisions. I believe that the values and ideas it instills in me will influence me for the rest of my life.
