Task 1
If university plans to add a new course that is not being offered tostudents, which of the following courses, in your opinion, wouldattract most students? |
|
1. Sound engineering and recording 2. History of rock music 3. Film studies |
|
Sample answer:
Well,I would like to choose film study for sure. For one thing, film is something that can attract most of the students rather than the other two options because they watch films as an entertainment often. Sound history and history of rock music are more professional and they really sounds a little bit boring actually. To be more specific, take me as an example, as an English major, I chose a movie appreciation class in my university, those wonderful films such as Forrest Gump really impressed me a lot with its perfect story and the American history background. Films can really teach you not only serious knowledge but also the truth about life which I consider students would like to treat seriously. (124 words) |

Sample answer:
The university is planning to open a wait list program for students in order to offering a chance for those who are interested in the course. Also it is a good way for university to know the popularity of the course. The man totally disagrees with this idea. For one, he points out that dropping out always happens after one week the course begins, so people who study from that time may feel hard to follow up with the professor and it is really not easy for them to prepare. Also, it is because the right timing or the certain professor why the student choose the course, and those may possibly be changed next semester. As a result, it is hard for university to judge whether the course is popular or not. Considering this two reasons, the man doesn’t think it is a good idea. (145 words) |

Sample answer: Reward power is a good way to motivate employees to increase their working efficiency besides controlling more company resources. The professor takes his friend Chris as an example to illustrate the concept. Chris works in a paper selling company and he is a team leader. The way this company usually rewards the employees is by having a party to motivate them to achieve higher performance indicators while the budget is hard to be controlled. His leader doesn’t think that is a good idea. So, Chris use the following two ways instead. First, he frames the picture of the monthly best seller and put them on the wall. Second, he writes a congratulation letter with a lot of compliments as well as praises to them. Both of these two methods can be achieved for free and motivate the employees efficiently. This is how reward power works. (145 words) |

Jenny has a time conflict between her biology course for graduation and helping her sister to take care of her kids. She is struggling about what to do. Here are the two solutions, first she could live in her sister’s house to take care of the kids in the morning and study in the afternoon, but it is a big pressure to go to study and come back to do homework at night. Also she can rent an apartment to study within six weeks and help her sister with the time left but her sister will be disappointed. I will choose the first solution. For one thing, keeping a promise is very important and her sister really needs Jenny’s help. Moreover, Jenny could make a reasonable schedule to study efficiently and make spare her time to do the homework, I think that will be a great opportunity for her. In this way, her sister will not be disappointed. (158 words) |

|
Sample answer:
The professor talks about two situations not to remove nonnative species. The first is the living environment of the nonnative species is not suitable for them to survive. For example, a kind of parrot from Mexico now lives in California. Because the trees have been cut down in their original habitat, as a result, they couldn’t live there anymore, so they were removed from Mexico to California. The second situation is that the nonnative species are beneficial for local species. For instance, there is one kind of grass by the beach coming from the United States west coast. It has become quite a comfortable habitat for a certain kind of bird of that place, so this kind of bird cannot live without the grassland. These are the two situations that professor uses to illustrate why the nonnative species could be removed at any time. (144 words) |
