(1)Ancient cities are always limited. But Roman cities grew much larger.
(2)First, the Romans had more advanced technology. One example is that the Romans developed a special building material, a concrete that would harden underwater. With that, they can build better and stronger bridges. With these, Romans could live on both sides of the bridges.
(3)Another is an improved way to move fresh clean water. They created special structures called aquadocks, waterways that stretch from mountain ways to cities. They can move great amount of water in a long distance. Thus, people can have bathing or drinking water without being near rivers. So cities can grow larger in new locations.
