首先是第五题各个环节的介绍：
Listening (conversation or discussion of problems and solution);
Speaking (describe the problem and talk about possible solutions. Your own opinion on how to solve the problem);

新托福口语考试第五题的问题形式很有规律，下面是四个示例：
Describe the man’s problem and suggestions the women makes about what he should do. What do you think the man should do, and why?
Describe the woman’s problem and suggestions her advisor makes about how to solve it. What do you think the women should do, and why?
Describe the man’s problem and suggestions the women makes about what he should deal with it. What do you think the man should do, and why?
The students discuss two possible solutions to the women’s problem. Describe the problem. Then state which of the two solutions you prefer and explain why.
通过对以上四个示例的分析，不难发现，考生在第五题中需要做四件事情：描述一个问题，总结两个解决办法，表述自己更喜欢的观点并进行解释。
鉴于第五题的题干是以对话的形式进行，网翟少成老师建议考生继续使用分栏的形式记录笔记，将对话中男生的观点和女生的观点分栏记录。这样，在回答问题时就可以对双方的观点做到一目了然。
最后，网翟少成老师为考生整理了四条建议(useful tips)，以帮助考生在考试中取得更好的表现：
The OPTIMAL time allocation is: 10 seconds for the problem, around 17 seconds for each solution, and 10 seconds for your choice and why, and about 6 seconds pausing throughout your answer.
DO REMEMBER that you HAVE TO state your opinion in your answer. BUT do not spend too much time on that.
Make your answers as SIMPLE as it can be, you really don’t have enough time to cover everything mentioned in the conversation.
DO say “the man/woman offers her/him TWO (or THREE) solutions.” This is to ensure that you get all the solutions even if you can’t finish your answer in time, so the examiner will still give you a good score.
