Task 1: Talk about a gift you gave to someone. Who did you give this gift to? Why did you give it to this person?

  Sample

I bought a camera for my dad last month. I bought it for him because he recently retired and plans to travel the world. I chose this particular model because it’s light and compact. It fits easily in his pocket so he doesn’t have to carry too much weight. The image quality is very good as well. His went to South Africa with this camera last week and took some amazing pictures of wild animals. The best thing about this camera is that it has build-in wifi. It connects to his cellphone so he could keep sending pictures to us during the entire trip.

Task 2: Do you think it’s easier to be a teacher or students?

  Sample

I think it’s easier to be a teacher. First, student’s life is hard and stressful. Being a student myself, I have endless homework and tests to deal with. I need to spend at least four hour finishing my assignments every night. I rarely get to go to sleep before midnight. On the other hand, teachers can go home and relax after a day’s work. Second, students are studying new subjects all the time while a teacher is repeating the same material over and over again. Take my Math teacher Mr. Tony for example. He’s being teaching the something for over twenty years, he’s so familiar with the materials that he can teach a class with his eyes closed.

  Statement on newspaper

The school is planning to ask the students studying in Spain to move from off -campus housing to on-campus housing.

Reason 1: student dorm is much cheaper than renting an apartment off campus

Reason 2: it offers chance to live with Spanish students which helps to improve language skills

  Conversation: woman disagree

Reason 1. You could find housing with lower rents if you keep looking for it

Her sister/classmate found a homestay last term which is less expensive

Reason 2. Most of the exchange students hang out quite often and in most cases they speak English. So they’d better live in separate rooms.

  T4

  Responding Effort

Research suggests when much energy and efforts are needed doing one thing, people would be reluctant to do it. If less efforts are required, people would be more willing to do it.

  Lecture:

When a group of children finish their drawing at school, they were required to put away all the crayons in the box. In the beginning, the students were unwilling to do so or they even refuse to have a try just because the box was too small and it takes time and patience to put the crayons in it. Yet later, the teacher took a larger bin to replace the box, and the students cleaned all the crayons up.

  T5

  Problem:

Solution1: Living in the dorm with the woman.

Not enough time. Don’t want to leave a bad impression on the professor.

  Solution2: Living in the hotel.

Expensive. Would lack money to invite other professors to come.

  T6

Why roosting is important to the survival of bats

Bats normally settle on high places like cave trees

Reason 1: Bats feed on insects and flying creatures, but they can not rest in the sky like birds, so they have to hang on trees to get ready to capture insects.

Reason 2: Bats are easily attacked by animals such as snakes. They could not fend off the enemies when they are sleeping, so they rest upon high places for safety factors.
