Task 1: Talk about a special event that you recently participated in. Describe it in details.
Sample
A special event that I participated in recently is volunteer teaching. My friends and I went to a small, under-developed village that’s far from the city to teach. I was assigned to teach kids English. I taught them some basic greeting skills which they thought was fun. During class breaks, we gathered outside to play sports. Some kicked around a soccer ball, some played badminton and some played pingpong. Everyone had a good time. Before we left, we made some donations to the school. People donated money, books and school supplies. I would to join go back to visit those kids soon.
Task 2: When getting advice, some people prefer to go to their parents, others prefer to go to their friends. Which do you prefer? Explain why.
Sample
I prefer to get advice from my friends for the following reasons. First, it’s so much easier to open up and talk to my friends about my problems. They don’t judge or give me a hard time like my parents sometimes do. It’s so much more relaxing to seek advice from my close friends. Second, my friends and I belong to the same age group. We face the same kinda problems. Most of our issues are school relate. Since we are taking the same courses, advice I get from my friends are usually more helpful.
Task 3
Reading:
The school has made a new policy limiting free printing in the computer lab. In the future, the students can only print 10 pages for free per visit and have to pay 5 cent for each additional page. This policy is limited to save paper and the money charged can be used to purchase more printers.
Listening:
The woman agrees with this policy.
Reason1: This policy will make students more conscious about what they need to print and help save paper. Some students used to print only a title on one page.
Reason2: The money which students pay for additional printing can be used to buy new printers for the lab and thus in return helps the students avoid the trouble of waiting. .
Task 4
Reading:
Place marketing is a marketing strategy to promote the most unique features of a place in order to attract tourists to the place.
Lecture:
Example: The professor gives an example of a small town near the sea which has beautiful beaches. It is the only town that has a bicycle path around it. The town uses riding bicycles and bicycle races as its uniqueness to attract tourists who love doing sports. As a result, it indeed attracts lots of active young people and the economy boosts.
Task 5
The woman's problem: she finds a summer job in another town and rent an apartment but she doesn’t know how to deal with her own apartment.
solution 1: rent to others and let them pay rents. The drawbacks are she 's afraid they will mess up her apartment.
solution 2: pay both rents. The problem is that she won't be able to buy a new computer.
Task 6
In the lecture, the professor talked about two ways of animals sending alarm signals to others.
The first one is an alarm call.
For example, when a bird encounters an approaching danger, it will cry and make a specific sound to alarm others that the predator is around.
The second one is chemical signal.
For example, when the salmon detects a hazard under the water, its skin would release chemical substance with a unique smell after its skin is hurt. Others salmons would sense the chemical alarm as a message to escape to protect themselves from predators.
