1. Some people think living in big cities is bad for people's health. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In many countries today, big cities seem to be stubbornly appealing to the mass population, along with which there arises the question as for whether living in a city will damage people's health. For me, the answer is definitely yes.
On one hand, the environment of most major cities, especially those in developing and underdeveloped countries, has been severely destroyed due to the overly quick industrialization. Take air pollution as an example, the speed of vehicles' injecting tail gas and erect chimneys' vomiting forth clouds of smoke is so fast and the volume so considerable that the atmosphere long before has failed to degrade the pollutants. Consequently, haze becomes a new natural hazard in many metropolises in the long run, with the PM2.5 densities in some reaching several times the national limit.
Apart from the threat posed to the physical health of city dwellers, the ever-accelerated living tempo, tuned with their competitive mind-set, is doomed to do damage to people's mental health as well. It is not uncommon that blue-collar and white-collar workers as well spend many more hours in workplace than in their home, not to mention enough time squeezed for relaxation and recreation. An extreme and tragic case in point is the soaring number of suicides in big cities.
Nevertheless, it has to be admitted that health facilities in big cities are increasingly available and in full set and not a few people are making efforts to keep fit. In the morning the young and old can be seen jogging around parks and after dinner women gather and dance on squares. Many companies and public institutes also organize activities to encourage their members to do exercise. But despite all the conveniences, few people can maintain their health as long as the air we breathe is still severely contaminated and the workload remains unbearable.
To sum up, theoretically, at least for now and in the near future, it is of faint possibility for the basic living environment to restore its purity and the society to cease to pursue the unsustainable development; therefore, pathetically, the health conditions of most city dwellers will still deteriorate.
2. People's shopping habits depend more on the age group they belong to than any other factor. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
One’s consumption pattern can be dictated by many factors including not only the environment where they live but also what they need in daily life. Thus, I tend to hold the view that age group is one of the many effects imposed on how people consume.
The reason why people purchase consumer products is a complicated issue but it is obvious to say that age plays a profound role in these behaviors because people in different life stages have different needs. For example, the elderly is more likely to go to grocery stores due to a more slow-paced living style, in comparison to younger generation, who are inclined to consume electronic gadgets for work or just as a tool to entertain themselves. There is an additional factor in this respect to be considered. People whose spending habits are formed to seek a sense of belonging to one group are common in society. They regard certain consumer goods as a token of their age culture so as to be recognized by peers.
However, demonstrating that age is an important factor does not mean that it is the only one that affects what people buy. Other factors such as latest fashion trend, brand images, or simply compulsoriness are accounted for purchasing behaviors. As well-designed advertising has invaded our daily life in forms of sponsorship, pop-up ads, billboard, flyers, or brochures, it is difficult to say they the public are immune to this. Commercials has the power of persuading consumers to buy what they produce nowadays regardless the practical uses. Luxury brands can be cited to illustrate this.
I therefore believe that shopping habits are the result of various elements. People need to figure out what they really need and what they can afford first before paying money.
