Does the work of art have enough power to change people’s lives?
但假如我们多思考一些,不难发现,除了美术作品,“work of art ”无处不在:Books,film, music, advertisement,都可以是“work of art”的载体。
Art is such a broad range of medium, it is not just the stereotyped view of canvas and music, but design. We go through day by day with art surrounding us in every aspect of our life. We watch TV and see advertisements with beautifully designed cartoons and expressions, and we tend to buy those frequently-advertised products; our laptops and cell phones are well-designed to satisfy different personalities and tastes to stimulate sales. Thus arts do have the power to change people’s lives in not only our attitudes towards life but also our lifestyle.
Films are carriers of art which can profoundly influence us in our philosophy towards life. Take Dessert Flower as an example. It was a film about a girl who was born in a disadvantaged country where women were forced to undergo the cruel surgery of Female Genital Cutting, as a way to guarantee loyalty to their future husband. This kind of surgery is never humane nor equal for a women because she is considered a possession to man. After such surgery, the protagonist Waris felt physically and mentally tortured, so she fled to her grandmother. By chance, Waris was found and became a model in London. At the pinnacle of her career, she quit her job as a model and became an UN Ambassador, to advocate the abolition of Female Genital Cutting. As a result, Waris helped to improve the fundamental dignity of women, and promoted gender equality to a large extent. This film reveals a universal fact that men and women are not equally treated and women are still inferior. Besides, from Waris’s seemingly rebellious action, we learned that to accept unfairness and social stereotypes is never a easy way of living life, we should aim to fight against all the injustice life has given to us. Dessert flower is just one example among the many which can tell us how films can enlighten us and give us a border view toward real life. Although we can not conclude this kind of enlightenment can stimulate action, no one cay deny the fact that some films, work of arts in other word, can change our perceptions towards life.
Besides changing attitude, workers on arts can actually stimulate action and change our way of life. Take advertisements as an example. We have seen now how advertisements motivate us: Television viewers find themselves bombarded with advertisements for high-calorie food. These advertisements do not cause much harm on their own, but allowing young people to give into temptation frequently can lead to obesity and a whole host of other health problems. With so many ads aimed at children, they are really susceptible. Audery Hepburn had once filmed a chocolate advertisement “why have cotton when you have silk”. This advertisement has been broadcast across the United Kingdom where candy and chocolates have always been their only choice of shakers since childhood. With so many youth been the fans of Hepburn, Galaxy Chocolates have been extremely popular in the UK for a period of time. Not just during that period of time, nowadays, the situation has never been changed, advertisements with gorgeous pop icons can also give us an illusion that the advertised-products had been the best, we must buy it.
Apart from the benefits of advertisements mentioned above, the recognition and fame of some art works, such as the Venus Figurine, leads to an increase in students who want to use their skills in art as their bred-winner all over the world, including designing, music, opera and sculpture. Thus demonstrating the far-reaching influence of art works and how it changed our lifestyle.
In conclusion, the work of art have enough power to change people’s lives, in not only how we treat life, but also how we live life.
