Since the invention of television in the early 20th century, it has greatly transformed our leisure and learning habits, especially the young generations,
It has to be noticed that there are numerous educational, well-informing, enlightening and inspiring programs shown on the TV. They, such as Discovery, or a program to display a process of repairing an ancient but fragmentary book, are portrayed with colorful, vivid and attractive visual and audio methods, engraving a whole picture for the viewers and allowing the boring word description to be easily understood. In this level, TV does help to arouse the interest and curiosity of young students to explore the complicated theory and nature.
Things, however, seem not that simple. There are more scenes with blood and nudity seen on the TV, which gives rise to more worries about the negative outcomes of watching TV. The violent and pornographic contents are often cunningly weaved in the plots of a TV play and these young audience could accept them unconsciously, then take them for granted. Many studies have proved that the violence and pornography in the media are the major factors to juvenile delinquency.
Though some people may say that some restraints could be imposed on these unfavorable shows, even more severe consequences resulting from uncontrolled indulgence of TV cannot be given little alert to. It is evident that the unlimited watching TV could dramatically weaken children’s imagination and decrease their attention span. Undoubtedly, TV programs are actually other people’s imagination displayed for us, and all we have to do is just to sit back and observe the information passively, thus inevitably impair the ability of imagination. Similarly, as we get used to short, quick and straightforward information, we seldom have patience if it takes a while to make a point then are apt to be distracted.
In conclusion, we cannot deny the values of many TV shows, but what should be watched and how often can be watched must be well guided.
