It provides a basic approach to thinking about every problem. Whatever your major is, you can benefit from learning it well. Literature can help us sharpen our ability to analyze and cope with complex social issues, stimulate our imagination and broaden our appreciation of art. Mathematics is a useful tool for us in solving problems involving calculation. For me, an Economics major student, I find that knowledge of mathematics can help a lot in my research. When analyzing data, calculation and plotting graph will help to predict economic phenomenon more accurately.
In the same way, graduate students with varied abilities would have a great advantage in competing with those who have only a limited scope. For example, Steve Jobs did not intend to profit from his typography knowledge, even though he ended up benefitting a lot from that class in college.
