Task: Governments are encouraging industries and businesses to move out of large cities to regional areas. Do you think the advantages of the development outweigh the disadvantages?
In many parts of the world, industries and businesses are removed from big cities to regional areas because of governmental policies, which I think can bring more benefits than drawbacks.
The main concern for the introduction of industries and businesses is that it can damage the local areas. The wastes produced from factories will give rise to problems in the form of air and water pollutions. Also, the establishment of large shopping malls can attract crowds of people, who may flood into those areas, with the residents’ lives being largely disturbed.
However, the damages to regional areas can be well controlled by planning and regulation. With the contemporary developed technology, pollutions can be minimised to acceptable level, and with the available successful business cases, the disorder during development can be avoided in advance. In fact, once industries and businesses are settled, a diversity of job openings and life choices will be offered to local inhabitants, who will therefore be able to have more promising futures than they used to.
In addition, because cities are usually more prosperous than the other parts of a country, redistributing industrial and commercial organisations to less developed regions can help achieve a more balanced economy. Backward areas will then have more opportunities to develop, and urban areas will be less likely to become overcrowded.
To conclude, moving plants, shops and companies from major cities to underdeveloped regions may lead to a few risks, but they can be easily dealt with. On the contrary, the benefits this policy can produce are of more significance in the long run. (262W)
