综合写作
考生要在3分钟内读完一篇230~300词的学术文章(约4 段)，阅读期间需要将每段的重点记下来。接下来，考生会听到一段反驳学术文章观点的学术讲座，并需要将反驳观点逐一记录。先前的文章一般会提出3个假说，而听力材料会针对这些假说给出3 点反驳理由。
录音播放完毕后，考生将有20 分钟的写作时间，按照题目的具体要求概述阅读及听力材料中的主要观点。本题的字数要求为150~225 词。
独立写作
考生要在30分钟内完成一篇表达个人观点的作文。字数应在300词以上。
题目多为问考生是赞成还是反对某一观点，且题目的意图不难理解。如：Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Your job has more effect on your happiness than your social life does. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.(2011年12月09日北美托福考试独立写作题，见第157页)
学生作文一般要写4段或5段。如果是4段体，中间段落只需要论述两个分论点。

Contrary to the belief in the passage that sentinels risk their lives for the cause of the whole group, the professor says that the meerkat sentinels are in fact less prone to threats.
