The reading material presents us with three proofs which certifies the idea that electronic medical records are superior to paper-based ones. However, the listening material disputes this idea with another three factors.
According to the reading, electronic medical record saves money because it reduces fees of storage and transportation. However, the professor of the lecture maintains that even though doctors have electronic medical records, they would also keep a paper record in case emergencies happen.
In addition, the passage holds the view that electronic record largely reduces the happening of mistakes. By contrast, the lecturer holds that mistakes are more likely to happen because doctors prefer to keep records of patients in the paper when they examine patients and then put the records into computer. Poor handwriting could lead to serious errors.
Ultimately, the writer takes the attitude that electronic medical records help establish a data base which promotes medical research. On the other hand, the professor disputes that medical records should not be too easily accessible and they are protected by law. Only when you get the owner’s agreement can you use the records. Therefore, it is still troublesome to use a data base of medical records.
