Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Newspapers and magazines are the best ways to learn about a foreign country.

  sample answer:

With the increasing development of technology, we now have the ability to acquire much information from foreign media sources. Because we can learn much about events happening in other countries from the mass media, such as magazines and newspapers, many people may think that reading magazines and newspapers is the best way to learn about a foreign country. However, I believe that only reading magazines and newspapers as a way of learning about a foreign country has several limitations.

First, we cannot deny that magazines and newspapers actually present some valuable information about foreign countries. However, the information that they present is often one-sided, so that readers can only learn about one perspective on an event happening in a foreign country. Also, the words and pictures in magazines and newspapers may not be genuine. If a government wants to conceal some facts, it may force the mass media to tell lies to its audience, and thus the information that readers receive may be fraudulent.

Second, I think that the best way to learn about a foreign country is to travel or live there for a while. By traveling or living in a country, you can see things that do not appear in magazines and newspapers, and by that process learn about the local political situation, state of the economy, and the uniqueness of the culture. You can obtain more information about a country by talking directly with local civilians about the overall situation, and can truly comprehend the local culture by living with them for a while. In contrast, if you are at home reading a newspaper or magazine, you simply acquire information provided by others passively instead of accessing information directly.

The information from magazines and newspapers is limited and sometimes not bone fide. By traveling or living in a foreign country, you can feel everything there with all your heart, and learn truths that do not appear in magazines and newspapers. Hence, I believe that the best way to learn about a foreign country is not by reading magazines and newspapers but by placing yourself in that foreign country.

Currently, with the increasing development of technology we are equipped the ability to gain much information from foreign countries, meaning you can know a large amount of events happening in the other countries from mass media such as magazines and newspapers. Therefore, many people may think that magazines and newspapers are the best ways to learn about a foreign country. However, I believe that these ways have some own limitations to allow one to know a foreign country.

First, we cannot deny the fact that magazines and newspapers actually have some information about a foreign country from which people can learn about. However, the information people gain from magazines and newspapers is one-sided, which means people merely can obtain a little part of things that are in a foreign country. Also, the words and pictures in magazines and newspapers are not necessarily genuine. If local government wants to conceal some facts, they may force mass media to tell lies to audiences; thus the information you receive may be fake.

Second, I think the best ways to learn about a foreign country is to travel or live there for a while. You can imagine that if you travel or live there, the things you are able to see and you cannot see in magazines and newspapers all emerge in front of your eyes, and by the process you can learn about local political situation, economical states and exotic culture. For example, if you are in an unfamiliar territory, you can get more information from local civilians about overall situation in the country by talking with them and really comprehend local culture by living with them for a while. In contrast, if you are at home, reading some newspapers and magazines, you just acquire information provided by others passively instead of accessing information initiatively.

The information from magazines and newspapers is limited and sometimes not bone fide, and if you are really in that foreign country, you can feel everything there with all your heart and know the truth which will not appear in magazines and newspapers. Hence, I hold my opinion that the best ways to learn about a foreign country is not reading magazines and newspapers but placing yourself in that foreign country.
