It is obvious that people’s lives have been greatly influenced by the automobile today. Many families possess at least one car now in China. Some cities even have to control the number of cars sold in each month in order to ease the difficulty of traffic. So it is not hard to see how important the car is and how desperately people need cars in their daily life. However, I contend with the idea that the airplane has had a greater effect on society compared with cars.
For one thing, without the airplane, it would be impossible to place an order online and get our goods delivered to us within three or four days, regardless of the distance. It has been popular for people, especially the young, to buy things online rather than go shopping in a real store. It is not only because goods online are relatively cheaper but also due to the convenience of delivery which should be attributed to the development of the airplane. Let’s say you place an order online to purchase something from the southern part of China while living in the northern part with thousands of miles in between. One only needs to pay ten Yuan or sofor the delivery and then go to work as usual, waiting for the goods to be delivered through airplanes in less than four days. So the airplane does provide more convenience for people in shopping.
For another, compared with the car, air travel shortens the distance between different cities and even countries all over the world. In the past, people had to travel by horse for a long period of time. Even from Tianjin to Beijing, it would take a few days. Difficulty intravelling used to be one of the main reasons for the slow development of the economy. People in the past had to settle in one place almost for their whole life. However, nowadays, many people even live in one city and work in another one. With the help of the airplane, they are able to get to a relatively distant place within hours. That is to say, there are more opportunities now for people thanks to air travel.
To summarize, in my opinion, the airplane has agreater effect on society than cars.
