Some students like classes where teachers lecture (do all of the talking) in class. Other students prefer classes where the students do some of the talking. Which type of class do you prefer? Give specific reasons and details to support your choice.
Students and teachers are the major body in class. In some classes, teachers do all of the talking, while in other classes, the students also take part in the talking. In my opinion, students’ participation in class is necessary.
It is easy for the students to feel bored if the teacher only lectures in class. In such cases, the students are the passive takers, for they just take down what the teacher says. Even if the teacher is adept at giving lectures, the students are still likely to become sleepy, absent-minded, and even to day-dream in class. It is hard to tell whether they really follow the teacher or not. Little by little, they will become less interested in class and will not like to come to class.
On the contrary, if students also do some of the talking, they are actively involved in class. Participation will help them concentrate. What is more, they will feel that they are part of the class, and it is no longer an obligation to come. Therefore, they will spend more time reading and thinking before class, so that they can speak better. When their talking attracts the other students’ attention, they will have a sense of fulfillment and become confident in themselves. In this way, their interest in class will grow, and their study will improve accordingly.
In addition, the students will develop their abilities through participation in class activities. Besides the knowledge they are supposed to learn in class, they will have the opportunity to hone their other skills. In order not to lag behind other students, the students will try to do their best in class participation. In this process, they will practice not only their speaking ability, but also their independent thinking; from organizing ideas, to expressing them. In the case of brainstorming, they will also learn how to cooperate and compete with others.
In classes where there is student participation, the students, instead of the teacher, have become the center. It is helpful to create a favorable study atmosphere in which the students play an active part.

一、 语言表达
1. It is easy for the students to feel bored if the teacher only lectures in class. In such cases, the students are the passive takers, for they just take down what the teacher says. 这句话的亮点在于用词的生动性,作者提到学生一种消极的状态,用词passive takers, 而没有用通俗的表达the students are passive. take意为携带的意思,taker就是接受者,那么把消极情绪带走或接收的人就是消极的人了。类似用法risk taker意为冒险的人。
2. Even if the teacher is adept at giving lectures, the students are still likely to become sleepy, absent-minded, and even to day-dream in class. 这句话是个让步状语从句,引导词为even if意为既便是…,意思类似于even though,但是两者有细微的差别。even if后面的句子内容是假设的,但是even though之后的内容是真实存在的。这句话的主句同样很精彩,在于其表语部分的并列sleepy, absent-minded, and even to day-dream,可见教师完全主导课堂形式的效果是非常乏味的。
3. When their talking attracts the other students’ attention, they will have a sense of fulfillment and become confident in themselves. 其中a sense of fulfillment为充实感的意思。
4. Besides the knowledge they are supposed to learn in class, they will have the opportunity to hone their other skills. 逗号之前这句话是个介宾结构,the knowledge是宾语,they are supposed to learn in class是修饰knowledge的定语从句。其中be supposed to是被认为应该怎样的意思。主句中的小结构hone是使…磨得犀利的意思,那么hone their skills就引申义为历练其能力。
5. In order not to lag behind other students, the students will try to do their best in class participation. In this process, they will practice not only their speaking ability, but also their independent thinking; from organizing ideas, to expressing them.第一句话中的lag behind是落后的意思,这句话是由in order to引出,但是这样的句式还可以换一种表达方式用so as to, 即The students will try to do their best in class participation so as not to lag behind other students.第二句话的连接结构为not only, but also, 这样的连接词相当于中文的关联词,其实作用与连词基本一致,但是关联词的引入更有其它的作用,比如强调部分句意。像not only…but also这样的表达法就是强调后者。以及之后的补充from organizing ideas, to expressing them.不仅增长了句子长度,也使其意思更加具体完善了。
二、 逻辑结构
本文逻辑结构清晰明了,一共分为四个段落来论证,正文段落为第二三四段,形式为反正正的结构,首先从反面说明教师主导课堂的坏处,之后分别从正面论证了学生参与课堂的好处。这种写作结构非常传统,具体来讲,文章首段提出中心论点,即In my opinion, students’ participation in class is necessary. 文章第二段作者提出第一个分论点,即teacher完全参与课堂会使学生感到厌烦无聊。第三段学生参与课堂的形式可以让他们集中注意力。第四段作者提出学生参与课堂的形式可以帮助他们各方面能力的提升。最后一段作者总结说明学生参与课堂的形式会给课堂营造一种积极的学习氛围。
