Every generation of people is different in important ways. Our generation, for instance, is different to my parents’. It is hard to describe the differences between the two generations precisely; however, we can easily identify some important points.
.First, my parents grew up in an environment that is quite different from ours. Two decades ago, China’s economic system was planned economy where people hardly had any chance to choose whom to work for, where to live, or even what to buy. In a sense, they were not allowed to choose or to enjoy personalized items. So, they are obedient, serious, and sometimes can be easily satisfied. On the other hand, people of my age are living in a free and diversified environment. This society provides us with various chances and choices. We can make decisions by ourselves. We do not have to follow suit. To some extent, we are rebellious, demanding and creative.
Second, my parents are thrifty. Having been living in poverty and suffering frequently from the lack of necessities, they know well about money. They seldom spend money on the stuff that they do not believe worthwhile, even if they have a big sum for a deposit. People of my parents’ generation rarely make buying decision beyond their purchasing power. However, people of my age often spend money for fun. What we buy without hesitation may mean nothing to our parents. We embrace paying by installments, or taking a loan, though our income is still low and not stable.
Finally, the generation of my parents’, who witnessed the Cultural Revolution and many other significant social changes, are not as romantic and naïve as we are. They are practical. They believe that reality means more than ideal ?. They do not make decisions on impulse, rather, they will try to figure out whether a decision is feasible or not. By contrast, possibly because we grow up in a much more prosperous and favorable environment, we are active, optimistic and sometimes naïve.
It is natural for two generations to differ from each other in many ways, because they come from very different backgrounds. Therefore, the two generations may understand each other better if they learn more about the generational differences. .
