Students are more influenced by their teachers than by their friends.
1. Some people argued that ‘Students are more influenced by their teachers than by their friends.’ Because of the main purpose that students go to school is to get education from teachers. But I disagree with that, in my opinion student are more influenced by their friends because of the following reasons.
At first, students spend much more time with friends than with teachers. In students’ daily life, ordinarily they only meet their teachers in classes. However, students can be with their friends both in classes and after classes. When I was in middle school, I spent only four hours a day with my teachers while more than eight hours with my friends. We studied and talked about everything together, they influenced me every minute. Whereas our teachers said nothing but about the subjects when we are in class, they influenced me limitedly.
Moreover, a friend will usually have a better perspective on one’s life than a teacher. Since students have spent so much time with their friends, it is more likely that they have similar perspectives on life, as they have gone through same situations together. Because of this, friends can have a better understanding of one’s life than a teacher. A student probable holds a friend’s influence as more important than a teacher’s, because they think alike.
Admittedly, most teachers have endeavored to exercise influence on their students. Commonly their approach is to have a student who always gets a low grade come to their office, then ask them ‘what’s wrong with them’ and try to offer some solutions. But their solutions seldom work, because they don’t really understand their students’ thoughts and why their problems come out.
To sum up, a student spends more time staying with their friends and they have similar perspectives on life, while their teachers spend most time teaching them knowledge and don’t understand their problems, so I believe that students are more influenced by their students than by their teachers.
2. All of us are surrounded by different kinds of people every day. For students, when they are at school, they are mainly surrounded by teachers and their friends. Both of these two kinds of people have great influence on students. However, I still believe that friends have greater influence on students than teachers do.
Usually a student and his friends are almost at the same age, or at least they have similar ages. Therefore, they will have a lot of in common, such as hobbies. As a consequence, they can talk to each other and imitate each other’s behavior easily. My little brother and his friends are both interested in soccer games and they spent almost all their spare time talking about soccer games worldwide and great football players. What’s more, my brother’s friend is a good soccer player and my brother tends to imitate his behavior. As a result, my chubby brother becomes better at doing sports, especially playing soccer. Meanwhile, a teacher won’t have such great influence on a student since teachers have less in common with students.
Moreover, in most schools in my country, the teachers just appear in front of the students when there is a class and they will leave the classroom as soon as the class in over. Thus, the students actually have limited time to communicate with their teachers. Even if they do have some time to discuss with their teachers, the topic of the discussion is usually the subject in class. However, a student could have hundreds of different topic, ranging from daily lives or school subjects, to talk with their friends. They have more time communicating and therefore, they know and understand each other better than their teachers. As for me, I can spend a whole day talking to my best friends but only an hour talking with my teachers.
In addition, an everlasting friend may have greater influence in the long run than a teacher. Some of our friends at school may become friends forever. This kind of friend will influence us even when we graduate. However, teachers, on the contrary seldom become everlasting during our lives. They won’t have as great influence in the long run as our friends do.
All in all, though I have to admit that teachers and friends both have great influence on students, I still believe that students are more affected by their friends. The more people have in common with you, the greater influence they will have on you. Therefore, a friend, who is the most similar to students, is the greatest influence during a student’s life.
3. There are many kinds of influences behind the success of a child. In my humble opinion, classmates are less influential to a child than teachers, especially when considering a child's success in school.
Children may grow up with few friends their own age, spending most of their time with their family. While at school these children may not be greatly influenced by their classmates as they have a difficult time relating to them. However, their teachers will play a vital role in their education and later success in life. My own experience as a child closely follows this line. I had little in common with my classmates and was forced to change schools often because of my parents’ jobs. This is no way stunted my development or stunted my success in school. I was gifted with having a succession of brilliant and caring teachers who took an interest in my wellbeing and intellect. These teachers insured that I was both supported and challenged in the educational environment. These teachers introduced me to a world of knowledge, giving me books that opened up worlds beyond my own limited world view that were far more stimulating and entertaining than my fellow classmates. They challenged me, always asking questions and encouraging me to ask my own—to grow intellectually, to question everything and to search for the reasons behind everything around me.
For myself, my classmates had little or no influence upon me. They were wane creatures who were dull and both difficult to relate to and uninteresting. My teachers on the other hand were wonderful. They were intelligent, wise and helped me to cultivate me own intellectual prowess and introduced me to a world beyond my own limited experience of what I had touched and seen at a young age. Without my teachers, I would have been lost and dull myself.
