Because the world is changing so quickly, people now are less happy or less satisfied with their lives than people were in the past.
With the revolutionary alternations in economic and political areas, many social issues have aroused people’s attention and heated discussion. There is no doubt that the more rapidly a society advances, the better people’s material life will be. But what about the condition of people’s spiritual world? After deep observation and consideration, I have to admit that the current prospects are far from encouraging. And the world in which we’ve enjoyed the convenience and innovation has to take part of the responsibility of upsetting and depressing us. I take this view on account of three conspicuous reasons.
Let’s start with observing the change of the employment situation in the past 50 years. As we all know, a successful career in which you can fulfill your potential, realize your ambition and gain career achievements will bring you the satisfaction and self-affirmation. Dating back 50 years ago, people were confronted with less competition since the population was controlled by the world-wide war. Specifically, in the 1950s China, every career was thriving and almost everyone, no matter well-educated or illiterate, was lucky enough to fit himself into a certain job. Any work can lead to success as long as people were diligent and creative. However, things are far from promising when entering the new era. The global employment crisis along with the pressure of population explosion has created many barriers for people to stand out from thousands of talents, let alone identify the types of job. Moving on, the trust crisis has spread over in our modern society. It is true that never before in the history has the material life been more comfortable than now. People are rarely worried about the scarcity of food or the attack of monsters. But complaints about the high crime rate are incessantly heard. Tremendous heart-breaking reports of crimes such as kidnapping and pilferage do let people lose faith in even the most intimate friends and relatives, let alone neighbors. People nowadays usually think twice before consorting with another one. For instance, I was required by my mum not to accept candies and other food from strangers and even neighbors when I was young. Therefore, the cruel fact of humanity leads us to build a fence between our neighbors and us. All these are brought by the rapid expansion of cities and households’ large accumulation of wealth over the past several decades, leading people more or less to be swayed by considerations of gain and loss.
What equally deserves reproach is the unhealthy eating habit brought by the high speed of modern society. We’re living in an age in which the Jungle Rules prevail. In order to survive and thrive in such a competitive society, people are sparing no effort to keep up with time. It seems that people find it hard to strike a balance between work and daily life. The process of preparing food high in nutrition and body-building vitamins for a whole family is no longer the source of happiness but becomes the obstacle for people who are focused on dealing with businesses and chasing limited resources. For instance, my high school was a history involved of processed food bought in the supermarket mainly because parents were so busy with their work and they were totally worn out after work. All these help illustrate the unshakable duty of fast living pace of people in modern time.
