For success in a future job, the ability to relate well to people is more important than studying hard in school.
1. People in our times have more opportunities to succeed but they also have to face more fatal competitions. As we know, success in our society requires extraordinary efforts in addition to an element of luck and some social network since we are living in an age that emphasizes team work and cooperation. Weighing the importance of social network against hard work, I think we have to be very clear about which field we are talking before we make a conclusion on which side is more important.
When it comes to the field of commerce and management, for example, social relationship plays a crucial role because success in this field requires a profound insight into what people are really thinking or what are really expected of us to behave in the society, explicit and implicit. In particular, China is a miraculous land where amazing things are happening all the time, most of which are rather inexplicable. Therefore, studying hard at school alone is insufficient. The school, or the teachers, may not be able to teach you everything, be it explicit know-how or implicit rules. On the contrary, you might continue to learn in the society when you realize that what you acquired at school is inadequate to handle the real-life issues because no one is too old to learn.
In education, similarly, being a good teacher requires you to have a good understanding of the students’ characteristics and their special needs in order to establish some intimate relationship, or rapport, with them, which is of vital importance to the final outcome of students’ learning outcome and academic performance. Leo, my TEOFL oral English teacher, for example, is extensively regarded as a good teacher who knows how to improve our scores in TOEFL by finding numerous ways to relate to us. He virtually remembers every detail, every anecdote of us and makes good use of these for classroom interaction.
In terms of career success in the field of technological applications, such as mechanics, doctors and translators, I believe that professional qualification is of greater significance. In the field of literary creation, the authors must demonstrate sufficient living experience but also need to maintain a detached perspective on life so as to guarantee their objectiveness and comprehensiveness. In some cases, the capacity of relating well to other people could prove to be counterproductive when it blinds their judgment. Therefore, the importance of relating well to other people should not be over emphasized or over generalized.
As an 18-year-old senior high school student capable of critical thinking, I think this is an open question. We should encourage the students to study hard at school and at the same time, remind them the importance of relating well to other people. This is the way out indeed.
2. Everyone in the society is seeking for success in career, but what is the key factor of becoming successful? There are two choices – good networking and hardworking. Although someone tends to choose the first aspect, I definitely agree that hardworking at school should be a key factor of success. Without hardworking at school, success in the future cannot be guaranteed.
To gain success in our future career, we must have solid knowledge of the field we choose. Under this circumstance, doing hard at school is the best way to quip ourselves with background knowledge. Although sometimes we may find things we have studied at school sort of unpractical, it is basic to handle real problems at work. Take myself as an example; I am now a senior major in journalism. I studied how to interview, how to write summaries and journals and how to make comments on subjects at school. I worked very hard and in the third year, I got a chance to be an intern in China Economic Daily. During this time, I totally put my knowledge into use and handle the real journalism with only a few problems. If I did not study hard and had no knowledge of journalism, how could I handle this internship?
Another thing we can get from our hard work is the way of solving problems. During the time we studied at school, methods of learning and solving problems are also of great importance. These methods can be put into use even when we graduate, since we all have o update our knowledge and solve problems when we are at work. Again take myself as an example, when I did my internship, I had to write down a lot of details of a certain event in just a few minutes. It was really difficult, but since I had found out a method of writing fast at school, I could put down things on paper really efficiently. This method provided a lot of help.
While some one may claim that we cannot ignore the importance of networking since a good networking may offer you greater chances to gain success. Anyway, I admit that we cannot get rid of a good networking. However, if we are not studying hard and have no abilities to do things well, how can people pay attention on us or even provide us good opportunities? Hardworking is basic.
All in all, hardworking should be the key factor of becoming successful. It provides foundations of our success in the future.
