Teachers should not make their social or political views known to students in the classroom.
1. Normally teachers are supported to guide the students to learn knowledge and help them to build an independent mind. How should the teachers do to gain these goals? Should the teachers share their social and political views with the students in the classroom? Some people are against of it because they think saying something like that in the classroom will waste the time of learning something useful, while some other think it would help the students to gain a better understanding of the world. As for me, I believe that whether to teach something about the society or politics depends on what age of the students you are teaching and what lessons are.
To begin with, let us talk about young children who are study in the elementary school and high school. The students at such a young age are too young to understand the social and political views. They cannot fully understand what the teachers are talking about but accept it without any independent thinking. Instead of talking about social or political views, I think, it is wiser for the teachers to let the facts known by the students and asks what they are thinking about it. As for students in the high school, teachers need to pay more attention to how to let students gain more knowledge and facts by themselves and try to give a opinion by themselves. Teachers should do their best to build up an atmosphere for the students to discuss with the others so that all the students would gain a better understanding.
However, as for students who are studying in the university, teacher should include some social and political events in the class. We know that students in the university are old enough to distinguish good and bad things. It is the time for them to think about our country, our society and of cause our government and the politics. Because after graduated from university, these students will step into the whole society that means they are going to face a danger world. If students have obtained more information about that they will be able to adjust to the society more quickly. As a result, students can make more contribution to their country and also get a better living standard.
To sum up, I would like to say, people at different periods in their life should obtain different information, so whether should teach something about society or politics is depends on what age of the students you are teaching.
2. Teachers should not make their social or political views known to students in the classroom.
It is indisputable that teachers play a pivotal role in teaching and guidance students in classes. They provide students a lot of precious knowledge which is very necessary for them in the future. However, should teacher show their social or political viewpoints to students? Each person has their own opinion toward this question. Some people approve it but others have the opposite one. In my opinion, I strongly agree with the latter that teachers should not make their social or political point of views in classes because it can reduce studying efficacy and influence viewpoints of students
First and foremost, teachers’ expressing their social or political opinions on the classes could reduce students’ studying efficiencies. In the classes, it is better for both teachers and students to focus on lectures and related problems. Teachers should discuss with students about the lectures, share their researching or working experiences instead of talking about their political viewpoints. It definitely will increase the studying efficacy in the classes. Moreover, it also provides students a lot of real and valuable experiences. They could use these if they face difficulties when they work in the real environment. Indeed, when teachers show their point of views on the classes, it should be considered to waste time of students.
Last but not least, when teachers make their social or political viewpoints known to students, they may influence students’ viewpoints. As a matter of fact, students usually do not have definite social or political standpoints. They are quite naive because they pay all their attention on studying and academic issues. Therefore, when teachers like showing their viewpoints, they may discuss or talk continuously about that issues. This really has an influence on the opinions of students, especially when their teachers’ opinions are biased. Additionally, this also prevents the free development of students. For instance, when my teacher usually expresses his disapproval about government, he makes us have the same opinions with him. Hence, most students of our class consider the policies or agreements of government are wrong or unsuitable without having any understanding about it. Obviously, the viewpoints of teachers have the potential to change the viewpoints of students
All in all, because when teachers manifest their social or political viewpoint on classes, it influences the studying effectiveness and students’ positions, I personally consider this is not a necessary work. I strongly recommend teachers concentrate on teaching and discussing academic-related issues on classes.
3. Whether teachers should be honest about their own political and social views or keep them to themselves is a controversial issue, especially in such countries as China where one can be persecuted for one’s political views. It is indisputable that teachers play a pivotal role in teaching and guiding students in classes. They provide students a lot of precious knowledge which is very necessary for them in the future. The crux of the issue is if teachers should teach through example and honestly discussing their own views with students, or whether they should stick rigorously to the given curriculum and develop a standoffish attitude when working with students.
If teachers are honest with students about their own views his can have both a negative and positive affect. Firstly, if a teacher is willing to be open with students about their own views in a calm and intellectual manner and engage with students on these issues in a reasonable way it can have a positive impact on the students. This allows students to question and learn about sensitive political and social issues in a safe atmosphere. Often students respect teachers more for being open about their own personal views and opinions. This improves the relationship between teachers and students and creates a positive classroom atmosphere where students feel safe to express and question their own social and political opinions and ideas.
There are some inherent dangers though if teachers are open and honest about their political and social views. The danger arises to the students if the views of the teacher are extreme and act to make the students feel isolated and uncomfortable in the classroom. Though this situation is rare, it is possible and should be avoided. Additionally, teachers themselves may be in danger if they are too open about their political view. In many countries, political views are regulated by the state, and if a teacher expresses a view that is not in-line with the one expressed by the state they may be in danger of retribution. A foreign English teacher of mine in Northern China was deported after he expressed his opinion that Taiwan was a separate state not within the sovereignty of the Chinese government.
In an ideal world, teachers would be able to express their own political and social outlook with their students. However, because of the potential negative consequences that this can incur, it is better for teachers, though not always students, if they keep their opinions to themselves.
