If I were asked to send one thing representing my country to an international exhibition, I would send something unexpected: television shows. These programs would best represent my country to the outside world who may not be familiar with my society. They show how the citizens of my country live..
The dramas on television are very realistic. They show how people in different parts of the country go about their daily lives. They show jobs and work, crime, and people’s general attitude towards others and their interactions. The dramas also show how people in various economic groups dress, what kinds of houses they have, and what kinds of education is available to them.
The comedies indicate what kind of sense of humor my people have. Even though the situations are exaggerated, they reflect how my culture deals with common human situations. People everywhere understand the pressures of work, the joy of love and the compassion of friends and family.
The documentaries show what issues we’re concerned about and how we want to resolve them. Some documentaries tell stories from the past. Others look into the future. Still others examine our political system, its failures and its successes.
Television is a common cultural experience. It reflects my country’s reality as well as its dreams, aspirations and hopes. I think it would be the perfect way to show what my county is like.
