The computer is one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century, and it has become a household word today. In a sense, we cannot do without computers. If I could create a new holiday, I would select a day to honor the birth of computers.
Computers are not only the machines that compute, but also the brains of numerous industries, such as designing, retailing, banking systems, even movies. For example, with computer technologies, dinosaurs in the movie Jurassic Park seem totally real. In fact, it is hard to find an industry that does not use computer technology. Besides, computers facilitate communications worldwide, making the globe smaller and smaller. With computers and networks, we are able to communicate with others very quickly. E-mail service enables us to exchange message in a few seconds. With net meeting services, we can talk with others, and can even see each other.
In my opinion, one of the best ways of celebrating the computer’s birth is to ask people to stop using it for a period of time. Suppose we decide to stop using any facility and service related to computers for s single day. What will happen? Our life would be in a terrible mess. We could not see a movie or watch TV, because computer technology is necessary for video programs. Nor could we make any phone calls because they are processed by a special computer—switch. Go for a drive? No! Most cars are designed and manufactured with computerized procedures. We cannot use any electric equipment, because the power network is controlled by computers. A practical choice is to have a walk. Yes, in a world where there are no computers of any kind, we can only choose to walk, to stay with friends or to do nothing at all.
It is hard to imagine a life without computers. We have taken it for granted that computers are doing many things for us. We can try to live in an environment where we are denied any computer technology, and then we will have a better understanding of what computers are doing for us.
