A/D: Universities should require all their students to learn about foreign cultures as well as their own culture.
College curriculum has long been the center of public attention. Some educators advocate intercultural studies should be made compulsory among undergraduates. I think this is quite necessary.
First, a good mastery of foreign cultures can help infuse students with a sense of globalization. With the prevalence of international cooperation and collaboration, the whole world has become a global village where optimizing resources bears the fruit of prosperity. It is no longer surprising to find grocery stores filled with foreign brands or long-distance delivered produce. People enjoy imported goods and techniques featuring higher quality and lower costs. A car, for instance, may consists of Germany made motor engine, Japanese windshield and European leather seats. To look at the bigger picture, one needs to know the strengths of others who take the lead in respective fields. This sense of globalization offers people a competitive edge one cannot gain otherwise. But all of this can be difficult to achieve without proper knowledge of foreign cultures.
Besides, exotic cultures and customs can also sharpen students' perceptions about the world. Sole understanding of one's own culture is usually compared to fixating on one single page of a book. It would be a shame if one turns a blind eye to the rest of the book that can be so foreign and different. That's why kung-fu movies easily stir up western imagination and strongly appeal to western appetite. Foreign cultures can be a good source for inspiration. They free people form conventional mentality and offers a foreign perspective. For instance, Italian galleries enjoy great popularity among art lovers because the history of Renaissance ingrains the world with an impression of breathtakingly beautiful paintings, sculptures and architecture. In order to appreciate the art, people need to learn about origins of the culture.
Furthermore, a good understanding of foreign cultures can be instrumental in dealing with international relations. Take body language for example. This can be rather tricky in cross-cultural communication. In western countries, it is common to see people meeting for the first time kiss on the cheek or give each other a warm hug. On the other hand, in the east such behavior can be considered inappropriate. People take first-time greetings more seriously in countries like Japan and Korea where bowing or shaking hands is more acceptable. Oblivious to such cultural differences, people would end up being misinterpreted or misunderstood. In times like this, learning about foreign cultures is not a option but a must.
To sum up, it is highly recommendable for college students to take courses on foreign cultures for better sense of globalization, foreign studies and cross-cultural communication. (Bao Lei)
