Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: It is often not a good thing to move to a new city or a new country because of the loss of old friends.
In our journey through life, we will go to many new places. Sometimes life takes us away from our family and friends. Sometimes we choose to move to new places and sometimes things beyond our control take us there. Whether moving away from our homes is a good or bad thing, sometimes it is necessary. Although living away from our friends and family is challenging, it is not necessarily a bad thing.
In today’s economy, it is hard to find a job. Many of my friends and cousins have had to move away from our hometown in order to find better job opportunities. For example my cousin Beth decided to go look for a job Honduras teaching English. Since she’s been living there, she has gone from teaching English to opening up her own international school. She now has a successful career and has found opportunities not available to her back home.
On the other hand, I have friends who have graduated and taken jobs that have nothing to do with what the studied in college. For example my friend Joe majored in English and is now a sales person at an Apple store. This kind of job will not help him with his career, but it is his only option. I always suggest that he should try and find another job in a new city, but he is too worried about being homesick. By staying at home, Joe has sacrificed finding a job doing what he actually loves.
Today, technology has made it easier to remain in contact with your friends and family and therefore easier to live farther away from home. New technology like the internet and Skype makes it easier now than ever to keep long distance relationships. My Aunt Karen, Beth’s mother, always jokes about how she actually talks more to Beth now than she even did when Beth lived at home. Not only is Beth able to remain close with friends at home, but she is also able to make new friends in her new home. She even met her husband in Honduras.
Even though it might be a challenge to live so far away, finding a job away from home has a lot of benefits. My cousin Beth found more opportunities and is much more successful than she would have ever been if she had stayed at home to find a job. She is so successful that she even gets the opportunity to travel home several times a year. There are some negative things about living so far away from friends, but there are always many positive reasons for moving away from home to find a job.
