Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Students should take a t least a year to work or travel before beginning college.
I think many students can benefit from a year of work or travel before college.
First of all, the time between high school and college is great for relatively consequence-free experimentation. You are young and curious, with few responsibilities to tie you down. And going to college a year later than your peers won’t make a big difference for your ability to perform in school anyway. Your math might get a little rusty after a gap year, but that’s easily remedied by reviewing before starting school. On the other hand, if you were to take a year off after college, it could put you at a severe disadvantage. Most of your former peers would have jobs already. If you went into a job interview after taking a year off, you would be hard pressed to explain how your year of unemployment traveling around India makes you more qualified than a fresh college graduate. Not taking a gap year before college is a missed opportunity.
Second of all, after working or traveling for a year, students will better prepared to make the most of their college years. Many enter college just looking to slack off and party, but a year abroad might change that mindset. Work can give you a taste of living in the real world, and travel can open your eyes to new ideas and cultures. These experiences will you allow you to enter college as a more mature person, and as a result, you will be less likely to squander your time there.
Granted, for the recent high-school graduate, travel can be pricey, and work can be hard to find. But these obstacles should not dissuade young people from taking a gap year—quite the opposite. They should be seen as potentially instructive challenges to overcome. Figuring out how to find a job or travel on a tight budget will teach you many things that will put you ahead of your peers once you enter college. These kinds of real-world experiences cannot be acquired in a classroom.
For all of these reasons, I firmly believe that most students should try to take a year to work or travel before college.(Richard)#p#副标题#e#
