There has always been a consensus of opinion about who should pay for elementary or secondary education, but when it comes to higher education, a controversial discussion has arisen. Some claim that government aid should only be offered to the top students as a scholarship and universities get their funding from student fees and private organizations. But I cannot agree with this argument. It is absolutely right for the government to provide financial incentive to college students on merit-basis so as to encourage excellence and cultivate talents. These top students have substantial potential to become elites in every walk of life in the future and make significant contribution to their society. In this sense, such investment is most worthwhile because the most profit may be reaped in a few years. However, this benefit excludes the poor who have not demonstrated outstanding academic performance. They would be missed out without easy access to financial aid, which is unfair to them and a waste to the society. When private organizations are the only financial source, the students in need would be put in unfair and dangerous situation. Though many private employers recognize higher education and set aside money to help with students to accomplish their study, the truth is the grants cannot cover everyone. Some of them claim repayment and some attach conditions to their grants. There must be some those economically disadvantageous students who are not qualified for any grants. In this case, social egalitarianism is impaired and wealth gap is broader. In conclusion, mainly depending on students fees and private organization would lead higher educational institutes to ignore the poor. Turning to private organizations is an option, but should not be the only channel for financial aids. At the bottom line, the government should guarantee equal educational opportunities and social status mobility.
