A devoted father braved bombs and sniper fire to rescue his son from the clutches of Islamic militants in Syria.

For 10 months ex-soldier Dimitri Bontinck tried to find his 19-year-old son Jejoen, who travelled to the war-torn region after after converting to Islam and becoming radicalised.

At the first sign of his son's increasing fervour he sought help from the authorities in his native Belgium - but was told that his son had freedom to worship however he wanted.

After his son left for Syria the Belgian authorities told Dimitri they could not help him track his son - so he took the extraordinary decision to travel there himself, befriending militants in an effort to find the teenager.

He told Sky News: "I followed a father's instinct, I followed my heart. I couldn't stay here just watching, not taking action and responsibility.

"It was a danger mission, believe me. I risked my life and met many fighting groups. At times, there were snipers above my head; bombs and attacks."

Dimitri described how he was beaten by militants who suspected he was a spy, saying only his love for his son allowed him to endure it.

Finally, on his third trip to Syria he was reunited with his son. He gladly returned to Antwerp with his father, admitting he had been "naive".

Now Dimitri is travelling back to the country to help misguided youngsters return to their families, including some from the UK.

However, Jejoen is now at the centre of a terrorism trial in Belgium as one of over 40 people being prosecuted for membership of a banned organisation.

Mr Bontinck denies the charges, claiming he worked as a driver at a hospital helping Syrians injured in the civil war.

"I worked delivering medical supplies, driving injured and sick people from one place to the other," he told reporters before his arrest.“

But Belgian authorities claim he was involved with fighting.

His father says criminalising youngsters who travelled to Syria and Iraq will only increase their anger against the West.

Recently, two female volunteers taken hostage by Syrian Islamists appeared in a video saying their lives are in grave danger.

Italians Greta Ramelli, 20, and Vanessa Marzullo, 21, were kidnapped in Aleppo last August while volunteering in the war-torn city.

A video emerged of the two women dressed in black head scarves and reading an apparently scripted message to camera at an unknown location.

The Italian foreign ministry spokesman declined to comment.
