Although teasing, or making playful fun of someone, is viewed negatively by many parents and teachers, some researchers believe that children’s teasing of one another has benefits. Researcher Dacher Keltner, a professor of psychology at UC Berkeley, is one of several researchers who views teasing as a form of social bonding. Keltner says kids tease each other to make friends. In this believe, he echoes others, who say that teasing can start a friendship. In addition to opening a conversation, teasing can test or display a child’s sense of humor- for example, “Is somebody paying you to wear that shirt?” Kids also tease to try out their sense of word play. For example, they might purposely mispronounce the girl’s name Magdalena as “Macarena.” In one study, researchers found that the most skilled teasers among 9 to 14-year-olds had the most friends. Researchers like Keltner know that teasing can turn cruel. They believe, though, that most teasing that goes on among children is good natured and playful. (Source of study: Lynn Smith, “Hey, Poo-Poo Head, Let’s Be Friends”.)
Topic sentence.
a.
b.
c.
3. The example of Magdalena is a : □ Major point □ Minor point
1. Although teasing, or making playful fun of someone, is viewed negatively by many parents and teachers, some researchers believe that children’s teasing of one another has benefits.
2. a. Social bonding
b. Tests or displays humor
c. Experiments with word play
3. Minor detail
