  1. Some people think the best way to solve traffic congestions in cities is to provide free public transport 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The solutions to the pressing issue of traffic congestions, especially in metropolis, have been a frequent topic of discussion. However, 24/7 free public transport service would not tackle this issue. Therefore, other effective measures would be in great need.

Theoretically, providing 24/7 free public transport, like underground and bus, could produce some positive outcomes, among which stands out convenience. This means that commuters could travel by any mode of public transport at any time. Moreover, it is free of charge, which might slightly ease the financial burden on the poor or people of middle class. Certainly, this would attract more public transport users, so the number of private cars may be reduced considerably.

However, this approach would exert more negative outcomes if it is carried out. One main disadvantage is the low-quality public service. By making it free of charge, public transport service would degrade to a certain degree, since the vehicle will be crowded and even suffocating. Another problem is that few people would use public transport at late night or in the very early morning; this would be a great waste in terms of public funds. Undoubtedly, people's financial burden would be heavier.

To solve traffic gridlock, we need to implement reasonable city road plan. It is true that some traffic jam is caused by inappropriate city road plan and construction. Thanks to high technology, it is also possible to install CCTV to make traffic forecast to drivers. Other strategies could exert significant effects, too, such as controlling and improving signal timing and restricting peak-hour curbside park.

In conclusion, 24/7 free public transport would not be an effective measure to resolve traffic congestion in the long term; hence other strategies need to be implemented at the same time.

  2. An increasing number of people change their career and places of residence several times during their life. Is this a positive or negative development?

Nowadays, job hopping and changing places of residence seem to have become a tendency for our generation. Some may insist that being loyal to one job and place be a better choice, but I believe that when compared to the benefits, the negative effects that change of jobs and accommodating locations may cause are insignificant.

Needless to say, staying at one job is beneficial to the mutual confidence and sense of security on the part of both employers and employees. Doing the same occupation also allows people to accumulate valuable working experience. Therefore, they are more competent to deal with the cases of emergency. Likewise, living in the same place enables them to form stable interpersonal networking, which means more chances of promotion.

However, not all the job seekers are lucky enough to find the job that really retains their interest or excavate their potentials. The shift of job and living areas could then be a win-win strategy both for the companies and employees. For the companies, “new bloods” often mean stronger labor force and vitality of the staff. For the employees, short-term jobs are more flexible, equipping them with a broader horizon and a variety of skills that may be useful even indispensable in their future career. For example, if one previously worked as a journalist and then switches to the advertising business. His experience in reporting may inspire a lot of creative ideas in him.

In light of the above discussion, I would conclude that no change of jobs or residence is wasteful as long as every shift is carefully considered. Furthermore, modern means of transport have also made it possible for people to constantly change their jobs and the places of residence.

  3. Some people believe that university education should focus on the skills of employment for the future. Others think should focus academic study only. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The closer communication between different countries has been a conspicuous tendency in recent years, both in economic and cultural aspects. Some people doubt the continually connections will cause vanishing of a country's identities. In my view, the result of international interaction depends on the situation in different nations.

In fact, the international contact is a definitely mutual benefit for countries. Due to the economically motivated, both states and entrepreneurs are interested not only in the domestic market but also in the oversea market. The closer connection opens up huge potential opportunities for the business corporation. Besides, the more cultural contacts, the better understanding of other peoples. Cultural communication can alter people's attitude towards another culture and embrace different values, which will promote multi-cultural understanding and even remove cultural barriers.

Admittedly, the cross-national interaction will also impose a negative influence on national identities, especially to those weak countries such as Pacific island countries and some mini countries in Europe and Africa. It seems that in these weak countries, the locals have become more familiar with exotic cultures, which reflects the foreign cultural invasion to some degree. For instance, the mainstream value of teenagers in these countries has been mainly shaped by Hollywood blockbusters instead of their traditional literature or other artistic works.

In my opinion, whether closer global communication will cause demise of national identities rely on different countries. American, as well as Canada and Australia, is marked by their high population mobility, or immigrants, to be more exactly. The culture in these nations is based on other cultures indeed. Therefore, they welcome different countries and it cannot be a problem to them. Also, some countries, like China, India and British, have their own unique ethnic identity and cultural confidence which come from their long history. Global contact will also be acceptable to them, too. Only to the weak countries, the local government should take steps to protect their vulnerable cultures.

In conclusion, the positive and negative influence of global communication really coexists. However, the outcome of closer contact is better or worse is determined by different countries.
