1. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The decisions that people make quickly are always wrong.
As the proverb goes, look before you leap. Therefore some people think decisions that are made quickly are always wrong. But I don’t think so. Not all the decisions made quickly are wrong.
Sometimes there are many factors impact on making a good decision. Maybe some quick decisions are wrong when we were in great anger or you were act on impulse. At the most of the time, we indeed should make some unimportant decisions that we do not need to think carefully. Such as we cannot spend too much time to deliberate what breakfast we should eat or what time we should go to bed. Because time is money, there is not so much time for us to think twice and quick does not mean negligent. A fantastic example of the commanders on the ground, they don’t have enough time to deliberate the situation, they must make the rapid and effective decisions.
For example, there is a 42-year- old explorer called Neil Butler. While walking in the sparsely populated western Canada in the snowfield, his feet were gripped by the bear trap. Even more frightening is that the temperature will be reduced to tens of degrees below zero, in this desperate circumstances, he had two choices: either froze to death or leg to escape. He made a quick decision: he decisively chose the latter. He didn’t keep his leg, but he saved his own life. If he had thought any longer, it might be too late to escape.
From my perspective, making a correct and quick decision depend on whether you are thinking seriously, conversely. Making a quick but wrong decision is because you lose your intellect.
2. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Teachers’ performance should be evaluated by students rather than by other teachers.
The quality of teachers determines the development of education of any country and the constructive evaluation of the performance of teachers will greatly contribute to the education betterment. Here comes a voice that their colleagues should have the last word on the achievement of teachers in their educational activities for co-workers know each other well and would offer sincere advice. I disagree. I believe that judgments from student will be of actual value.
To begin with, objective feedback from students can boost the improvement of teachers’teaching activities. English classes serve as typical examples. Students in the classrooms are experiencing their teachers’ teaching activities and methodology, from text explanation and pronunciation to in-class exercise and daily assignment. However, whether the knowledge is effectively delivered and students’ academic ability is enhanced through all these teaching processes could be only assessed by students. With the audience’s comments, teachers can make relevant adjustment on their focus, like diverting time previously spent on vocabulary instructions to writing mechanism, and in this way, English classes will deliver better results.
What’s more, students’ evaluation can build up the bridge of understanding between teachers and students. It is because from their remarks, teachers could know the favorable communication method for students and locate the problems in their daily contact. For instance, students will all make various mistakes in their school years, such as, being late, failing to hand in assignment in time, or even cheating in exams. And teachers have to talk to them as the problems occur. If students could also give teachers evaluation periodically on their communication effectiveness, teachers will find out whether their students like their communication ways or not and make changes if necessary.
Admittedly, we could not ignore the benefits brought by fellows’ remark on teachers’ performance. The reason is that education co-workers always provide many professional suggestions on teachers’ daily work in evaluation process. For instance, guidance on dealing with troublemakers from senior teachers is always bliss for green hands and time allocation reminder could also help teachers to arrange their class activities properly. However, these abilities and methods do not have to be acquired through colleagues’judgment; they could be obtained through many other channels, such as seminar or reading pedagogical books.
In conclusion, though other teachers’ evaluation could generate some minor merits for teachers teaching activities, this benefit could be achieved by many better methods. On the contrary, the advantages of asking students’ comment on their teachers’ performance should not be replaced, for it can enhance the quality of teaching activities and promote the communication between teachers and students.
3. Do you agree or not agree with the following statement? Learning only three or four subjects in a semester is better than taking too many classes at the same time.
As the society thrives, the topic of how many classes a student has to take during a semester has aroused wide attention in the society, especially among educators. From my own perspective, a student should only take three to four classes in one semester on account of the reasons below.
First of all, students are able to acquire professional knowledge accurately if they only need to have three to four courses during a semester. Too much knowledge from different subjects will confuse students and erects serious effects on their efficiency of studying. For instance, my friend Erika had eight courses in her last semester. Even though all of her courses were not really difficult and she worked hard every day, she still received pretty bad mark in her final exam. The reason why Erika did not achieve the mark she should have gotten is that she mixed up several terms in chemistry and physics. Therefore, too many courses in one semester will achieve the opposite consequences.
Secondly, taking three to four classes in a semester will not bring too much pressure to students. According to a recent research done by an educator, students now have to do their homework until ten every day including weekends and what is worse, almost 500 hundred students are willing to commit suicide every year because of pressure. Imagine if students have to take seven courses in one semester, how much homework and pressure will they receive? Compared to that, three to four courses will definitely reduce students' study burden and have a happy childhood.
Lastly, less courses in a semester will bring more spare time to the students for community service and interests. For one thing, nearly every student hopes to gain more time for their interests. Thus, reducing the number of classes in a semester will provide students with an excellent opportunity to develop their hobbies and to do community service. A socialist had said once that the society does not need the people who are only armchair generals and have no practical experience. In order to prevent students from being "armchair generals", schools have the responsibility to offer students chances to broaden their horizons. Therefore, having three to four courses in a semester is better than having seven to eight courses.
In conclusion, only having three to four courses in a semester can enable students to obtain knowledge accurately, reduce their study burden, and offer them more spare time for community service and interests. Therefore, I agree with the latter proposal.
4. Do you agree or disagree:Young people today are more likely to invest their time and effort on improving the world than young people in the past.
In the past young people didn’t care about improving the world, so they never spent time improving it. That is why it is getting worse and worse. Young people today, however, care about the world very much so they are willing to invest their time in order to improve it. And the reason young people nowadays care about the world is because they still have to live in it for a long time and because they are more enlightened.
In the past young people did not spend time improving the world, so they must not have cared about it. I don’t know why they didn’t care about it because I am young and care a lot about the world. But I know they didn’t invest their time to improve the world because there are so many problems now. If young people in the past had made the effort to improve the world, there wouldn’t be so many problems. For example, the world is now facing a serious environmental problem. If young people in the past had recycled and done other things for the environment we wouldn’t have this big problem now. It seems those young people were too busy spending time on themselves.
Nowadays young people care very much about the world and are willing to spend their time to improve it. For example many of my friends and I often talk about the environment and we all agree we should solve the environmental problem. That is why we sometimes spend some time to clean the environment. For example, two years ago I saw some trash on the street. It would have been faster for me to walk past it. However, I decided to use some time to pick it up and put it in the trash. This shows that I care about the world and am willing to spend time to improve it.
I think that the reason young people care about the world and want to improve it is because they still have to live in the world for many more years. We don’t want to live in a dirty world. Instead we want to live in a clean place. And since the young people from the past don’t care about the world they don’t spend time to clean it. But today’s young people are more enlightened, so they are willing to invest more time to improve the world.
In the past young people didn’t spend their time improving the world. That is why young people today are faced with serious problems, such as the environment. But young people today are enlightened and value living their life in a clean world. They care about it so they are willing to invest their time.
5. Do you agree or not agree with the following statement? It is usually not a good thing to move to a new city or a new country because of the loss the of old friends.
With the rapid development of technologies, the process of globalization is progressing quickly. People have become more likely to move to another city or country in pursuit of their goals. Some people contend that it is a bad idea to move to a new place because those who relocate lose their current friends. I strongly disagree with this statement for several reasons.
People who move to new locations do not need to lose their friends, as they can take advantage of technologies in most countries to keep in touch. People can use numerous means of making contact, including telephone, e-mail, and online chat software. These technologies easily allow one to maintain relationships. For example, my family moved from Hengyang to Changsha several years ago due to my parents’ work assignment. Since our move, I have preserved my relationships with my old friends in Hengyang by chatting online; we even see each other often through video conferencing. In addition, as the transportation system has expanded quickly, it is very convenient for me to take trips to visit my old friends now and then.
Furthermore, moving to new places broadens people’s horizons, supporting their personal development. By traveling internationally, one can gain a better understanding of various customs, histories, religions, and cultures. With a broad view, people become more optimistic and active. My uncle, for example, used to be very shy and unsure of his purpose when he was young; he became much more confident and positive after he finished his undergraduate program abroad. He has always said that his four years of campus life abroad changed his way of looking at life.
Though technologies allow people to connect with old friends at a distance, they do have some disadvantages. For instance, when friends who live in different cities cannot communicate face to face, they may have unnecessary misunderstandings and disagreements. Despite these challenges, I insist that it is not bad to move to other places, given the enormous benefits that relocating can bring.
In conclusion, people who move to new cities and countries should not worry about losing their friends, as technological advancements can secure their relationships and moving can offer them great benefits.
