Georgetown University
1.Short essay
In the space available discuss the significance to you of the school or summer activity in which you have been most involved.
【关键词】significance, school, summer activity, most involved
Every other week, I volunteer at a local school library. Libraries were my favorite places when I was in school, enjoying them because of the quiet and comforting environment. But I did not know the library itself was a great book until I started volunteer work.
My duty was to put away the books returned by students and put them back in the places they belonged, perform some cleaning, and maintain the order of books on shelves. I was thinking this kind of physical work was simple and easily repeated. I thought that if I were the librarian, I would be bored to death! But on the other hand, I was kind of looking forward to this simple work. However, when I walked around in the library I found that most of the librarians were focused on whatever they were reading, some were taking serious notes, and some had a pile of related books in front of them. That reminded me of the times when I checked out books from library, and would see the librarian in charge of scanning the borrowed books. They were always holding books and reading carefully. They were the ones that knew the library best, and could immediately point out a book’s location if I was unable to find it. They were in the richest of treasuries and did not waste their time there.
2.Essay

Essay one (All applicants)
The Admissions Committee would like to know more about you in your own words. Please respond to one of the following two prompts:
(A) Please submit a brief essay, either personal or creative, which you feel best describe you.
【关键词】personal, creative, best describe you
My parents would say I am a stubborn kid. Since primary school, I have always insisted on finishing all my homework before dinner, and would not do anything else before figuring out the word problem in my math homework or the essay in my Chinese homework.
My teachers would say I am an annoying student. I always chase after them for further explanations or discussions about questions I had during classes, and I ask them so many questions that they feel a lot of pressure when they see me.
My friends would say I am the type of friend they hate and love. I am obsessed with correcting them, no matter whether in pronunciation when they are talking or in their use of the wrong words in messages or Weibo.
To me, I am doing the right things no matter what each of these groups accuse me of, and I enjoy it. (152 words)
(B) Describe an experience you have had living or working in a diverse community. How might that experience help you to contribute to the life of a university community like Georgetown?
【关键词】experience, living or working in a diverse community, contribute to Georgetown
My aunt was an English teacher at University, and so has a lot of foreign friends. Saying hello to them or talking to them was never a big thing for me; but last summer vacation, a boy from London was assigned to us as his homestay family in China, which turned out to be a big thing for me because I had never actually lived with a foreigner. My parents were as nervous as I was, and hoped we would all get along well. We all felt really excited and couldn’t wait for him to come.
The first day we met I was too shy to talk to him, and so my aunt was basically the only one who chatted with him. Still, I listened to the conversation, and learned a lot about him: this was his first trip to China, he loved playing Xbox and he played the piano.
But after the first two days, we grew closer. I showed him around our city and told him about my life there, and he told me about his life too; I learned that his family was actually from the Republic of Ghana, but that he was born and raised in London, so he knew very little about his family’s home. Since I was so interested in Britain, he shared a lot of information with me.
The welcome meal we had was in a restaurant, so one day I suggested making hotpot ourselves at home, and to my surprise he had never heard of hotpot! I explained every detail to him during the preparation, like how to prepare for a hotpot, how the food would cook and how to eat it. We helped my mom cut the mushrooms into pieces and washed the vegetables. He taught me related English words while we did the preparation work together.
He was so curious about hotpot, and even took photos and said that he wanted to post them on Facebook and share them with his friends.
After dinner, he offered to teach us how to dance, and for the very first time I learned that just touching my head, shoulders and knees, I could make moves that looked like a real dance. We pushed the table and chairs out of the way, and my parents joined in too. The music played through over and over again, and everyone was very happy throughout.
I will never forget the feeling of sharing different cultural customs, listening to his foreign stories, and dancing, and am happy that we opened up new worlds for each other. (428 words)
