Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

In order to succeed, it is better to be more like others than different from everyone else.

  Disagree

Success is something that everyone is in pursuit of. Some claim that being more like other is highly likely to be successful, for people can draw others’ experience, thus avoiding making mistakes. However, I believe that being different from others can achieve more accomplishments.

Consider business field. Companies that only keep producing outdated products would be kicked out because of peer companies’ fierce competition. However, those who are always different from others can achieve great success. Take Apple company as an example. Unlike all other computer companies who consider hardware quality, running speed and processing efficiency as the most conspicuous strategies to attract customers, Apple Company wisely take an unconventional step, paying more attention to appearance, especially when all computers had similar hardware and application. Apple Company designed Macbook with unique metallic texture cover, friendly interface and fantastic animation, all of which quickly catch consumers’ eyes. Apple’s market share soared after the release of Macbook. 8 out of 10 students chose Macbook in colleges, for it represents professionalism and fashion. The success of Apple company should be attributed to its uniqueness and creativeness.

This is the same case with art arena. At Vincent Van Gogh’s age, the tendency of painting is focusing on realism. Every painter applied perspective, anatomy skills and the natural relationship between light and shadow to depict objects as accurately as possible. On the contrary, Vincent van Gogh, regardless of the orthodox style, tried to concentrate on subjective image and intended to express his own feelings and illusions. By pursuing his own painting style, he established the foundation of postimpressionism. Not only did he paint many works that so many people appreciate, but also many museums collected as their valuables. Had Van Gogh not insisted on his own way, he would not have become so successful.

Admittedly, keeping different may have drawbacks. The individuals who come up with new ideas possibly have to face the risk of losing acceptance of others, and companies who do not follow the conventional way have to pour a large amount of money in researching and developing brand new products. However, compared with the ultimate success, these difficulties are minor issues.

All in all, only when one is different from others can he/she stand out from the crowded.
